Hey you, do you like Lord of the Rings? Even if you don't (shame on you), you gotta admit, this is pretty cool.
The guy who built this house is named Simon Dale. He built it in four months for £3000 (about $4750) for himself, his wife, and his two kids to live in. It's dug into the ground, meaning that it's insulated from the weather, and was constructed wholly from materials found on his property in Wales. You don't have to be a green freak to want one of these houses. Check out the crazy awesome ceiling.
And he doesn't even do architecture. To see more pictures and learn more about how you can build a hobbit house of your own, check out his site: http://www.simondale.net/house/index.htm. There's forums, a how-to guide, and other useful resources. I know what I'm doing this summer.
Happy Hobbiting!

ReplyDeleteI wonder where in the States you could do that... with building codes and safety nazis.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised you can get away with it in the UK.

ReplyDeleteI had the coolest mental image of Bilbo Baggins from Wales.
ReplyDeletei saw an article about building houses out of sod and other natural materials, they're supposed to be pretty cool and green of course. I dream of doing this one day, the idea of making your own home is just too awesome.
